What is Genetic Counselling?
Genetic counselling is a conversation-based process that helps you understand whether an inherited gene mutation could affect your risk of developing certain cancers. It also helps you understand what that might mean for your family.
This process is guided by a genetic counsellor, a healthcare professional trained to provide clear information, guidance, and support, so you can make informed decisions about your health. Genetic counsellors also provide ongoing support to help you and your family understand, cope with, and adapt to the emotional and practical impact of hereditary cancer.
During a genetic counselling session, you will learn about:
- Whether genetic testing may be appropriate for you
- The benefits, limitations, and possible results of genetic testing
- How an inherited genetic condition may affect your own cancer risk and the risk for your family members
- Options for cancer screening, risk reduction, and prevention based on your personal and family history
- How personal values, family goals, and cultural or religious beliefs may influence your decisions
What Is Hereditary Cancer?
A small portion of cancers are labeled as "hereditary" because they are caused by gene mistakes that increase a person's risk of developing certain cancers. These gene mistakes can be passed down from generation to generation.
Identifying an inherited cancer predisposition can help guide personalised cancer screening, prevention and treatment. It may also provide important information for other family members who could be at increased risk.
Who Should Consider Genetic
Counselling and Genetic Testing?
You may benefit from genetic counselling if you:
- Were diagnosed with cancer at a young age (before age 50)
- Have a personal or family history of:
- Triple-negative breast cancer
- Male breast cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Metastatic prostate cancer
- Colorectal cancer diagnosed before age 50
- Endometrial cancer diagnosed at a young age
- More than one primary cancer
- Have a family member with a known hereditary cancer syndrome or a gene mistake (mutation), such as BRCA1 or BRCA2
- Would like to better understand your inherited risk of cancer and whether genetic testing is right for you
If you're unsure whether genetic counselling is appropriate, our team can review your personal and family history to help determine whether genetic testing may be helpful. It is important to know that you do not need to have cancer to benefit from genetic counselling; individuals with a strong family history of cancer may also be eligible for assessment and testing.
